D.C. Sports in Review: March 28, 2010

Monday, March 29th, 2010

What a week it was in D.C. sports. We start off with the red hot Capitals as they achieved a franchise record in points with 108 after losing to the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in the shoot out in Raleigh. Rookie defensemen John Carlson got his first career NHL goal. Besides the loss, the Caps won the highly anticipated matchup on Wednesday night at Verizon Center in D.C. as they beat rival Sidney Crosby and the Penguins 4-3 in the shoot out. In that game the Caps were down 2-1 but came rolling back with two third-period markers to send the game into overtime. The Caps are 3-0 against the Penguins this year. The next matchup is April 6 in Pittsburgh.

Although the Caps, on top of the Eastern Conference standings, are rolling right into the playoffs, the Wizards are close to the basement. They are currently on a 13-game losing streak. There have been a lot of off and on the court distractions this season. In the middle of the first half of Tuesday’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats, F/C Andray Blatche was benched by head coach Flip Saunders. The Wizards were in that game most of the time, but lost in overtime 95-86. The also lost the second game of a back-to-back stint with the Indiana Pacers 99-82 on Wednesday. We will see what happens next week. The Wizards could play out of their slide.
