Terps-Middies game kicks off football season, Nats host Mets for last time this season, Skins ready for archrivals

The 2010 college football season got under way Labor Day. Nicknamed The Crab Bowl, the game featured the Maryland Terrapins vs. the Navy Midshipmen at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. Missing many opportunities to score, Navy fell to Maryland, 17-14. They fumbled the ball at the 1-yard line and missed a field goal early on in the game. The Terps opened the game on a 14-0 scoring run before Navy tied it up at 14. Navy’s next home game is Saturday, Sept. 11 in Annapolis at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium with a 3:30 p.m. kick-off against Georgia Southern. The Terps’ next battle is against Morgan State, 6:00 p.m., Sept. 11, at Byrd Stadium in College Park.

After having back-to-back wins in Pittsburgh, the Nationals returned to winning ways as they defeated the New York Mets in a Labor Day matinee 13-3. Danny Espinosa had six RBIs and hit two home runs in the game. Nats Cuban rookie pitcher Yuneski Maya made his major league debut as he faced the Mets Dillon Gee Tuesday. Both pitchers made their MLB debuts as the Mets won 4-1 to avenge Monday’s Nats victory. Although a rookie in the US, Maya, 29, is a seasoned player who was on the Cuban national team, which took home the silver medal from the Beijing Olmpics in 2008. The Mets drafted Gee, 24, in 2007. Matched in size and stats before the game, Gee came away with an ERA of 1.29 and Maya’s ERA soared to 7.20. Gee pitched a no-hitter through five innings, while Maya gave up a three-run homer in the first inning. The Mets wrapped their visit to D.C. by winning Wednesday day game, 3-2.

As we all know, this week is Dallas week as the Redskins season starts Sunday, Sept. 12 with an 8:20 p.m. kick-off against the Dallas Cowboys. This is one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL. The game will be nationally televised on NBC Sunday Night Football. The Skins ended the pre-season with a 2-2 record.
